Therapy in Ann Arbor, Michigan

In Ann Arbor, many individuals have a strong understanding of their thoughts, emotions, and patterns, yet still find themselves feeling stuck in ways that insight alone has not resolved. From the outside, things may appear thoughtful and well-managed, but internally there can be a sense that something is not shifting in the way it should.

We provide psychotherapy services to individuals in Ann Arbor and throughout Michigan, offering consistent, thoughtful care for those navigating more layered or complex experiences.

How Services Are Delivered

Services are primarily delivered through secure telehealth, allowing for greater consistency, privacy, and flexibility regardless of location.

In-person appointments may be available on a limited basis within Michigan when clinically appropriate.

We serve individuals in Ann Arbor and surrounding communities, offering care that is both accessible and consistent.

What Brings People to Therapy

People often reach out when they have already developed a strong level of insight, yet continue to feel stuck in patterns that are difficult to shift on their own.

We work with individuals navigating:

  • trauma that continues to affect day-to-day life
  • patterns that persist despite awareness or prior therapy
  • medical or health-related experiences impacting emotional stability
  • life transitions that affect identity, roles, or direction
  • relationship patterns that feel difficult to change
  • a sense of disconnection or lack of movement despite understanding

Ann Arbor’s connection to academic and medical environments often brings individuals into close proximity with highly structured systems of care and high levels of knowledge and responsibility. While these environments offer significant expertise, many individuals seek a space that feels separate, private, and more fully their own.

Having a place to step outside of those systems can allow for deeper processing, greater openness, and work that moves beyond understanding into meaningful change.

Approach

Our work is grounded in trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches that support deeper processing, emotional regulation, and meaningful change over time.

We focus on steady, consistent care that allows underlying patterns to be understood and worked through, rather than remaining at the level of insight alone.

What This Work Involves

This includes:

  • processing experiences that continue to carry emotional weight
  • working through patterns that persist despite insight
  • supporting regulation when internal systems feel overwhelmed
  • navigating the emotional impact of chronic or complex health conditions
  • creating movement where things have previously felt stuck

Specialized Care Available to Ann Arbor Residents

Ann Arbor’s connection to the University of Michigan Health System means many residents are navigating significant medical experiences — including cardiac diagnoses, complex health conditions, and the emotional aftermath of treatment. Heart and Mind Counseling offers therapy specifically designed for individuals living with chronic illness and congenital heart disease, providing support that most general therapists are not trained to offer.

Heart and Mind Counseling is believed to be one of the only therapy practices in the country with multiple clinicians specializing in the mental health needs of individuals living with congenital heart disease and chronic illness — a gap the medical community has identified as critically underserved.

We also work with individuals managing complex PTSD, dissociative disorders, OCD, ADHD, autism, and eating disorders — conditions that often carry significant emotional weight and require specialized clinical knowledge to address effectively.

Our clinical approaches include:

Medication Management Available Our on-staff Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides medication management, allowing therapy and psychiatric care to be coordinated within the same practice — no referrals needed.

Inclusive & Affirming Therapy

We welcome individuals across all relationship structures, backgrounds, and identities — including those in polyamorous relationships.

Michigan Connection

We work with individuals throughout Michigan, allowing for continuity of care regardless of location.
