Therapy in Canton, Michigan
The future we build is often shaped by where we come from.
Many people spend years creating opportunities for themselves and their families. They pursue education, build careers, support loved ones, invest in their communities, and work toward goals that reflect their values and hopes for the future. Along the way, they often find themselves balancing responsibilities, expectations, traditions, relationships, and the realities of everyday life.
Canton is a community that understands this balance.
One of Michigan’s most diverse and family-oriented communities, Canton is home to people from many different backgrounds, cultures, professions, and life experiences. Some families have lived in Michigan for generations. Others have built new lives here after relocating from different states or different parts of the world. Despite these different journeys, many residents share a common goal: creating meaningful opportunities while remaining connected to the people, values, and experiences that matter most.
That balance is not always easy.
Career demands, parenting responsibilities, family expectations, relationship challenges, chronic illness, trauma, grief, caregiving responsibilities, and major life transitions can create stress that becomes difficult to carry alone. Even positive life changes can bring uncertainty, pressure, and emotional exhaustion.
At Heart and Mind Counseling, we provide specialized psychotherapy services to individuals throughout Canton and the surrounding Metro Detroit region. Our clinicians help clients navigate trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, relationship concerns, grief, life transitions, caregiver stress, and the emotional challenges that often arise when people are trying to build meaningful lives for themselves and those they love.

Building a Future Without Losing Yourself
Many people in Canton are accustomed to carrying significant responsibility.
They are supporting children, helping aging parents, managing demanding careers, strengthening relationships, planning for the future, and trying to create stability for the people who depend on them.
For some, this includes navigating multiple generations within the same family. For others, it may involve balancing different cultural expectations, family traditions, or competing responsibilities. Many people find themselves trying to honor where they came from while also creating new opportunities for themselves and their families.
Over time, it can become difficult to know where your own needs fit into the equation.
Therapy provides a place to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself while continuing to care for the people and priorities that matter most.
The Pressure of Holding Everything Together
People who are highly responsible often become skilled at managing complexity.
They solve problems. They support others. They adapt. They continue moving forward even during difficult seasons of life.
Because of this, many assume they should be able to handle everything on their own.
Yet emotional burdens often accumulate quietly beneath the surface.
Stress, anxiety, relationship strain, grief, trauma, health concerns, family conflict, and life transitions can become increasingly difficult to manage without support.
Seeking therapy is not a sign that something is wrong. It is often a recognition that you have been carrying a great deal for a very long time.
A Community Shaped by Opportunity, Family, and Connection
Canton is a community where education, opportunity, family, and community involvement play important roles in everyday life.
Many residents are deeply invested in helping others succeed, whether that means supporting children, strengthening relationships, advancing careers, caring for aging family members, contributing to their communities, or creating new opportunities for future generations.
At Heart and Mind Counseling, we understand that emotional well-being is an important part of that process.
Success is not simply about achievement. It is also about maintaining healthy relationships, developing resilience, navigating life’s challenges, and staying connected to what matters most.

Specialized Care Available to Canton Residents
Heart and Mind Counseling specializes in clinical work that often goes beyond what general therapy practices offer. Our practice is built around individuals facing complex experiences — trauma, the emotional weight of serious illness, presentations that haven’t responded to traditional therapy, and the kinds of work that benefit from dedicated training and clinical depth.
Many of our Canton clients are receiving care through U-M Health (Michigan Medicine) or other Michigan health systems and are looking for therapy that understands the emotional weight of managing serious health conditions.
We work extensively with complex PTSD and long-standing trauma, including experiences that have been carried for many years without a clear space to be addressed. The work is paced thoughtfully, and the deeper material is approached only as trust and readiness allow.
For individuals living with chronic and complex illness, we provide therapy that specifically addresses the emotional and identity dimensions of long-term health management — including cancer, transplantation, autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, congenital heart disease, neurological conditions, chronic pain, and the cumulative weight of multiple conditions at once. If your specific condition isn’t named here, reach out — we likely either work with it regularly or have clinicians experienced in similar presentations.
We also work with individuals navigating grief, life transitions, caregiver fatigue, and the emotional impact of medical experiences for both patients and the families around them, along with those managing ADHD, OCD, complex anxiety, dissociative experiences, and eating disorders.
Trauma work is one of our practice’s deepest specializations. Our team includes multiple clinicians trained in EMDR (led by a Certified EMDR practitioner), a Brainspotting-trained clinician, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), and a clinician certified in Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), with somatic approaches integrated throughout our trauma work.
Our clinical approaches include:
We welcome individuals across all relationship structures, backgrounds, and identities — including those in polyamorous relationships.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does telehealth therapy work?
Telehealth sessions happen over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — much like a regular therapy session, just from wherever you feel most comfortable. You’ll get a private link before each appointment, and most clients tell us they actually prefer it: no commute, more privacy, and easier scheduling around real life.
Is therapy just as effective via telehealth as in person?
Yes. Research over the past decade has consistently shown that telehealth therapy is as effective as in-person care for most conditions, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and complex trauma. For many people, it’s actually more sustainable long-term — easier to keep appointments, less disruption to daily life, and a sense of safety that comes from doing the work in your own space.
Can EMDR and Brainspotting be done via telehealth, and is it as effective as in person?
Yes — and this surprises a lot of people. Both EMDR and Brainspotting have been studied and adapted for telehealth delivery, and outcomes are comparable to in-person sessions when delivered by a trained clinician. Trauma work is one of our practice’s deepest specializations — our team includes multiple clinicians trained in EMDR (led by a Certified EMDR practitioner), a Brainspotting-trained clinician, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), and a clinician certified in Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), with somatic approaches integrated throughout our trauma work. This means we can match the right modality and clinician to what each person actually needs.
I feel like I should be able to hold it all together for my family. Why would therapy help with that?
Many of our clients are people who carry a great deal for the people they love — supporting children, helping aging parents, honoring family traditions, meeting cultural expectations, and building opportunities for the next generation. Therapy is not about second-guessing your commitment or your capacity. It’s a different kind of support — one focused on you, with a trained clinician who can help with experiences that don’t always respond to determination, effort, or love alone. Trauma, grief, chronic stress, and long-standing emotional patterns often need specialized tools. Reaching out isn’t a sign that you’re not doing enough. It’s a way to protect the future you’re building for yourself and everyone who depends on you.
Do you take Blue Cross Blue Shield and other Michigan insurance plans?
Yes. We’re in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Priority Health, and many other major insurance plans common in Michigan, and our panel is continually expanding. Ford, GM, and other automotive industry employees, U-M Health staff, and Plymouth-Canton Schools employees are often covered under plans we accept. When you reach out, our Practice Manager Deb Benoit can verify your specific plan and benefits before your first appointment, so there are no surprises. We also offer self-pay options for clients who prefer to keep therapy outside their insurance records.
